About 27% of our region’s shoreline is modified with armor, like bulkheads and seawalls. Unfortunately, this armoring can have significant negative impacts on our nearshore ecosystem, changing the composition of beaches and coastal habitats, altering coastal ecology, and reducing the resilience of the coast to rising sea levels. Tackling this problem and reducing shoreline armory is a major goal for the Northwest Straits.
This is why we started our Shoreline Armor Reductionv Program (SHARP), which offers incentives and services to shoreline landowners, especially those concerned with erosion on their properties.
