Rates of Marine Species Mortality Caused By Derelict Fishing Nets In Puget Sound, Washington

Abstract

Lost or abandoned fishing nets made of synthetic materials may persist in the marine environment for years or even decades and have been shown to continue to entangle and kill target and non-target species. Although animals observed during the recovery of derelict nets can provide information on species impacted, they only represent a portion of the total mortality caused by the gear.
