Alder is valued for its nitrogen-fixing ability, which enriches the soil around it. It also provides habitat for wildlife and helps stabilize soil.

Alder is a deciduous tree that features doubly serrate, oval-shaped leaves and produces small, cone-like fruits. Flowers small and red, borne on long cone-like catkins. The bark is white and gray.
