Salal provides valuable edible berries, flowers, and leaves for humans and wild animals alike. It also creates stabilizing root systems and habitat for birds and native mammals. 

Leaves are tough and oval-shaped. They are typically green and often develop red and brown spots. They have pink, bell-shaped flowers and deep blue berries.
